Free long-term care seminar provided
A free long-term care insurance education seminar provided by the Cayuga County Office for the Aging and Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth will be held at noon Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Skaneateles Library, 49 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles, or at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Skaneateles Community Center, 97 State St., Skaneateles.

Heart Expo will offer free tests, fun
Auburn Memorial Hospital will sponsor its annual Heart Expo from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the hospital in Auburn. This free event offers a variety of family fun and education for the community.
Cholesterol testing will be available from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. (12-15 hour fasting is required) and pulmonary function tests and blood pressure screenings will also be available.
For youth visitors the event will feature a moonwalk, carnival games, face painting and cartoon characters.
A variety of information on how to avoid a heart attack and stroke will be on display, with health care professionals available to answer questions.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Cayuga County will sponsor the NAMI Family-to-Family Education program specifically for families of people diagnosed with serious mental illness. The 12-week series of classes will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the second floor assembly room in Auburn Memorial Hospital.
The course will cover information about the major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. In addition, participants will learn techniques for coping, listening and problem solving.
Lecture to be given on preventing falls
“Preventing Falls & Improving Balance through Exercise” will be the topic of a free, public lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Auburn Memorial Hospital, 17 Lansing St., Auburn. The event will take place in the auditorium, located on the hospital's lower level. Tom Bishop, P.T., and Daniela Kowal, P.T., will be the speakers.
Also scheduled is a talk on “Advance Care Planning: Sharing Your Wishes” for Tuesday, Oct. 23. The speakers will be Barbara Bowen of the Human Services Coalition and Michele Nolan-Bell, director of quality assurance at AMH.
Reservations are not necessary. Free parking for attendees is available in the hospital parking garage. For more information, contact the AMH Community Relations Office at 255-7239.
Two walks benefit breast cancer research
The American Cancer Society will host two walks, “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” Sunday, Sept. 30, in Waterloo and Syracuse.
Supporters may attend either non-competitive walk, the Waterloo walk held from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Sunday, at Waterloo Premium Outlets, or the Syracuse walk held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse.
