JV football team deserves better playing venue

Monday, September 17, 2007 12:10 PM EDT

I want to voice my displeasure with the Auburn Enlarged City School District, preferably the athletics department. My wife and I and other parents of the Auburn High School JV football team were relegated to watching the Sept. 8, 2007, game on a rock strewn, hard-as-cement practice field behind Holland Stadium when we should have been watching it at Holland Stadium.
Even our West Genny guests were asking why the game wasn't being held at Holland Stadium. I was embarrassed. I tried to get in touch athletic director Tamela Ray, but instead spoke with an unidentified woman who stated to me that all JV sports are played behind Holland Stadium and have been for some time. I informed the woman that the modified, freshman and JV football teams shared Seward Field last season.

We need to let the Auburn school board and Tamela Ray know that this is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We parents of the kids that play on the JV team need to call Tamela Ray to voice our concern. We need to attend the next school board meeting and vent. We pay school taxes and we should be able to watch our kids play on a decent football field.

" Fund raising and sports boosters don't foot the bill for the maintenance and up keep of Holland stadium, tax payer dollars do, so I think its only fair to see other team sports get to use it once in awhile and not solely for the use of the varsity teams. "

" The field only has about 20 weeks or less a school year it can be used. Summer is not a month for use school is not in session 10 weeks. Winter it can't be used 16 weeks. Spring usually has rainy conditions 8 weeks. One field needs to be reserved for varsity sports. A second field needs to be developed for JV sports. Face it daddy JV sports are the minor league, even though your major league kids are blessing the program with their presence. "

" All our kids deserve to play on the best athletic field in the area at Holland Stadium. Additionally, all our kids that are 12 & under should be given the option of having bus service to and from school. Why do we continue to reward mediocrity in our School Administration through back door promotions and huge raises and yet fight to avoid "spending taxpayers' dollars" tomake the learning experience safer for our children? "

" First of all Brew1234, do you have any kids that participate in sports for the Auburn Enlarged School district,if so I don't think you would respond that way.Second of all ,I heard the school district was approached buy a "corporate sponser" a few years ago and turned them down.Thirdly ,Why did the school district put the turf field up for vote only to be turned down by the voters. If sports booster or fund raising can't get it done and the school district can't get the voters to vote in a new turf field so be it but don't tell me that the JV Football team has no right to that field because they do.It's not going to kill the athletic dept. to add a few JV home games to Holland stadium. The stadium is only used on a average of 12-15 times a school year. I don't think thats considered "overuse" "

" Who labeled it a varsity field, as a taxpayer and parent my kids should be albe to play their games on it. It will only be worse if it were turf. Nobody would be able to use it in fear of wearing it out. "

" Organize a fund raiser and seek out volunteers to improve the field. The school budget is strained now to provide something called an education. You have no right to the varsity field. Overuse of the field will harm the field conditions. Look for a corporate sponsor to install turf at no expense to the school system at the varsity field and field conditions will not be a factor. Education is the business of the school system and the taxpayers. Sports is the business of the parents and sports boosters. The state champions should have enough pull to get sponsor paid turf. Work on that instead of whining for the schools to pick up the tab. "

" I don't know what we are saving Holland Stadium for. Its a beautiful field only for varsity teams. This spring my son was excited about playing his final modified lacrosse game on the field but that didn't materialize. They should put a big sign out there VARISITY ONLY. No others welcome. "
