AUBURN - The Cayuga County Arts Council will vote Sunday whether to use a 1996 grant to purchase the former Schine's Theater. A subcommittee of the council calling itself Friends of the Auburn Schine's Theater (FAST) formed in late June to take control of the Schine's resurrection. The Schine's Auburn Theater, popularly known as the Schine, has been a downtown landmark in Auburn since it was erected on South Street in 1938. In its glory days, the art deco theater screened first-rate movies and packed crowds into its 2,300 seats. Today, however, the 12,848-square-foot historic building lies vacant and in shambles, a dirty and rusty shell of its former self. It has a hole in its roof, molding carpets and ceilings that are caving in. Since the theater's doors shut for good in 1992 a grass-roots community effort has existed to return the Schine to a well-kept and functioning downtown enterprise.

STERLING - The issue of hunting has been a source of conflict here since the Sterling Nature Center opened in 1996. The matter will be addressed again by the Sterling Site Commission at a public meeting at the Town Hall, tonight. The commission is expected to decide whether to approve the hunting policy drawn up by the county Legislature's Public Works Committee in August. Limited hunting has been allowed on the property in late November and early December, while the park was closed to other visitors.
