Cayuga County Election Commissioners determined Auburn mayoral candidate David Dempsey must file an itemized report of campaign revenue and expenses with their office and the state.

County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Katie Lacey submitted a complaint that Dempsey failed to submit an itemized campaign finance report by the Sept. 3 deadline, even though he raised or spent more than $1,000. Dempsey, a city councilor, faces former Auburn Fire Chief Michael Quill, in a Democratic primary Tuesday.

“If you incurred expenses and/or received contributions prior to Sept. 3 that exceeded the $1,000 threshold, you will need to file an amended itemized report with our office” the commissioners wrote to Dempsey.

Because he is a mayoral candidate in a city of more than 10,000, Dempsey is automatically required by election law to file itemized report. A member of his campaign said a report would be available in time for the next deadline at the end of the month, but that money has only been spent in recent days and not prior to Sept. 3.

The Dempsey camp labeled Lacey's complaint as a personal vendetta against the councilor who forced a primary with committee-endorsed Democrat Quill.

The commissioners also requested Independence Party Chairman Michael Lonsky to file an itemized report for his committee's campaign activity. Lacey also complained that the Independence Party was illegally contributing to other party campaigns.

The commissioners said there is no Election Law provision barring that practice.
