The sixth time is the charm.
After winning five straight Pinckney Division titles and coming up empty in the playoffs each trip, the Auburn Doubledays captured the New York-Penn League championship on Friday, defeating the Brooklyn Cyclones 4-1 to sweep the best-of-three series and end their title drought.
Auburn's last championship came in 1998 when they were co-champions with Oneonta. The Doubledays were solo champions in 1973. It is Auburn's eighth New York-Penn League championship.
Just like every Auburn starter this postseason, Brett Cecil turned in a masterful performance, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run. J.P. Arencibia and Darin Mastroianni added two-run home runs to boost the offense.
Auburn's staff completely shut down the Cyclones offense in the series, allowing two runs and 10 hits in the two games.
