Volunteer work for disabled a great use of time
Each Friday, The Citizen features someone in education from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight Debby Schwarting.
Q. What is most rewarding part of being a member of the board of education? Why?
A. Watching our students reach their fullest potential, whether they are the valedictorian or a student with special needs. I am very proud to be a part of the process and to celebrate their many and varied accomplishments.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. Keeping the needs of our students as a focus while remaining cognizant of our fiscal responsibility to the community. Secondly, is dealing with the multitude of unfunded mandates from New York state.
Q. What is the part of your day you could do without?
A. I could do without confrontations with community members when I cannot share confidential information about the topic they want to discuss.
Q. If you had to grade your own performance, what letter grade would you give yourself? Why?
A. A+ for effort. I am in my 16th year on the board, so an A for my performance as there is always room for improvement.
Q. School year: Too short, too long or just right? Why?
A. I love summer vacation. But because there is so much to accomplish in a school year, we could benefit with having additional instructional days. We could skip the mid-winter break in February.
Q. If you weren't a board member, what would you probably be doing? What would you like to be doing?
A. I would probably be doing more volunteer work as an advocate for people with disabilities. I would like to spend more time taking care of my gardens and reading.
Q. Fill in the blank. When I was in school, I had the toughest time in my _______ class. Why?
A. I had the toughest time in geometry and chemistry class, because I didn't study enough.
Q. Fill in the blank. The best teacher I ever had was _______ because _________.
A. Miss Wallace because she tutored me for the first half of eighth grade while I was home recuperating from surgery. When I returned to school I was ahead of the rest of the class!
