If he could, he'd be a rock star
Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone in the food services industry from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:This week, we spotlight Shawn Thomas Wilson, crew member at Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?
A. Pizza. It's one thing that can have either vegetarian or meat toppings, so it caters to a couple of different needs.
Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am home in the kitchen, I __________.
A. Microwave a lot.
Q. What do you like most about living and working in the Finger Lakes region?
A. It's a decent place to live, and it feels like a safe environment.
Q. If you were given $1 million to open your own restaurant or bar, describe the bar or restaurant and what type of food you would serve.
A. It would definitely be a pizza place, and it would give people an option to make their own toppings and throw them on. Or we would do it, but the option would be there. It'd have a cooler atmosphere, visual and lighting effects when you sit down. The atmosphere is too dry and dull at a lot of the places around here.
Q. Where would it be located?
A. Probably where the old KFC was, right on the main strip. We'd get more business that way.
Q. On the day of your restaurant/bar's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be the first three guests, who would they be and why?
A. Chris Cornell, because he was good at the KRockathon. Maynard (James Keenan), lead singer of Tool. And Violent J from the Insane Clown Posse.
Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.
A. One day I walked around at least half a day with my pants unzipped. And the regional manager, who only comes here like one day a week, was the first one who spotted it.
Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?
A. Value your customers, product quality and inventiveness. Do something in the business that hasn't been done before.
Q. If you weren't working in the food industry, what would you like to be doing?
A. Other than music, I'd probably be in merchandising and inventory.
Q. Ughh. What's the one food which you absolutely can't stomach?
A. Olives. Just the way the taste hits my taste buds.
