A support group for caregivers of people diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's disease will meet the second Wednesday each month starting at 6 p.m. Sept. 12, at Mercy Health & Rehabilitation Center on St. Anthony Street in Auburn. No registration is required.

Fit Kids conference tackles nutrition
Dr. Brian Wansink, director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab and author of “Mindless Eating,” will discuss his fascinating research on eating behavior and will offer strategies for “mindlessly eating better” at the Fit Kids conference held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Holiday Inn in Auburn. Also presenting is Jill Jayne, R.D., creator of the children's fitness show “Jumping Jacks with Jill.” This program is sponsored by Finger Lakes regional nutrition programs of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Program tells men ‘Let's Talk About It'
The American Cancer Society will host “Let's Talk About It,#” a program aimed at getting medically uninsured and under-insured men and their significant others talking about prostate cancer, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Lake Region Urology, 192 Genesee St., Auburn.
This event is open to all uninsured and underinsured men age 45 and older and their significant others. Free prostate exams (blood test and physical), skin cancer screening, blood pressure checks, diabetes testing and take-home colon cancer screening kits will be available.

Overeaters group to meet weekly
Sensible Eating and Exercise (SEE), a free weight management support group, will begin its weekly meetings starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the The Unitarian Universalist Society of Auburn, 607 N. Seward Avenue, Auburn. Space is limited to no more than 14 participants.

Auburn Memorial Hospital will sponsor its annual Heart Expo from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the hospital in Auburn. This free event offers a variety of family fun and education for the community.
Cholesterol testing will be available from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. (12-15 hour fasting is required) and pulmonary function tests and blood pressure screenings will also be available.
For youth visitors the event will feature a moonwalk, carnival games, face painting and cartoon characters.
A variety of information on how to avoid heart attack and stroke will be on display, with health care professionals available to answer questions. Various pharmaceutical companies will also have exhibits.

Deaf FBI agent to speak at dinner
WHOLE ME Inc. will hold its fourth annual dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Carnegie Convention Center in Cicero. Headed by CEO and co-founder Christine Kovar, of Skaneateles, WHOLE ME is a Lakeland-based nonprofit that educates children with a hearing loss, as well as their parents and the community at large. The dinner's featured speaker is deaf FBI agent Sue Thomas. Cost is $30 per person, $50 per couple. Checks should be made out to WHOLE ME Inc. and mailed to 1015 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse, NY 13209. Additional donations will also be accepted.

Nominees sought for doc of the year
New York State Academy of Family Physicians is seeking nominations for the 2008 Family Doctor of the Year. The only requirements are the physician must be in good standing in the New York State Academy of Family Physicians and provide outstanding service to their patients with a devotion to family practice.
Individuals are encourage to send letters of nominations to the NYS Academy describing why their doctor should receive the award.
Letters should be sent by Nov. 10, 2007, to New York State Academy of Family Physicians, 260 Osborne Road, Loundonville, NY 12211.
Family education program offered
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Cayuga County will sponsor the NAMI Family-to-Family Education program specifically for families of people diagnosed with serious mental illness. The 12-week series of classes will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the second floor assembly room in Auburn Memorial Hospital.
The course will cover information about the major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. In addition, participants will learn techniques for coping, listening and problem solving.
Two walks benefit breast cancer research
The American Cancer Society will host two walks, “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” Sunday, Sept. 30, in Waterloo and Syracuse.
Supporters may attend either non-competitive walk, the Waterloo walk held from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Sunday, at Waterloo Premium Outlets, or the Syracuse walk held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse.
