AUBURN - “Know your numbers.”

James Kennedy is the director of the Cayuga Community Health Network, Anne McCarthy is the program coordinator for the Tobacco Free Partnership for Cayuga County and Suzanne Hai is the executive assistant of the Cayuga Community Health Network and coordinator of the CNY Diabetes Prevention Partnership.
That phrase, experts say, should be a mantra for anyone who suffers from diabetes and its related illnesses. Maintaining proper blood glucose levels and monitoring both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings should be foremost in a diabetic's self-care, they suggest.

Starting last month, the Cayuga Community Health Network, a self-described “rural health network” that provides various health services to community residents, has partnered with the Central New York Diabetes Prevention Partnership to offer a “Lunch and Learn” series.

The six weekly meetings, according to the CCHN, have served to “raise the awareness among employees of downtown Auburn about the risks of Diabetes Type II.”

Last Thursday, the organization held its final Lunch and Learn presentation at noon at the Knights of Columbus in Auburn. The hour-long program included “Proactive Health,” a presentation about various health-monitoring techniques led by Valerie White, a health expert with the Cayuga County Department of Health, and “One Touch Changes Everything,” a diabetes monitoring talk presented by Denise Thurston, a representative of medical supply company LifeScan.

“The (CCHN) is a non profit organization that was established in 1989,” said Suzanne Hai, network executive assistant, from her office. The network was recently awarded a Diabetes Prevention Partnership grant from the New York State Department of Health, one of five CNY counties to receive such funding, she continued. “The Lunch and Learn series was part of a work plan, which was one objective that helped us fulfill requirements of the grant.”

At Thursday's program, about 20 guests enjoyed sandwiches and drinks before settling in for White's presentation.

“'Know your numbers' - that's a phrase you'll hear me say a lot today,” she told the audience when starting her discussion. White's talk included techniques for monitoring cholesterol levels (“A total cholesterol level of less than 200 is best,” she said) and healthy blood pressure readings.

“Good target numbers are 120 for systolic levels, and 70 for diastolic,” she explained.

Thurston's talk centered around OneTouchGold.com, a free online magazine for diabetes sufferers presented by LifeScan, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Among the guests was Auburn resident David Quinci, who said he suffers from Type II diabetes.

“Above all, I've learned to keep paying attention, you know, from a diabetic standpoint,” he said about the information presented. “Most of the things we've talked about, I already knew, but (today's meeting) has been a good reminder.”

On Monday, CCHN will present “Making Sense of Carbohydrates” at Auburn Memorial Hospital, the next meeting of its county-wide diabetes support group.

The free program will be led by local nutritionist Christine Gutelius, and is open to pre-diabetics, Type I and II diabetes sufferers as well as family and friends, Hai said.
