Public invited to primary debate
Residents in the city of Auburn will have a chance to ask questions of the Democratic candidates seeking citywide office during a forum next week.
The forum, being sponsored by The Citizen in cooperation with the Auburn Holiday Inn, starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the hotel on North Street. Candidates for city council will be the first to take questions.
The mayoral candidates will follow at 7:15 p.m.
The event will feature the candidates who will be facing each other in city council and mayoral primaries being held Sept. 18.
The winners of those races take the Democratic line in the November general election.
County changes training date
The Cayuga County Department of Planning and Economic Development has changed a training session to Oct. 1.
Members of government boards, appointees and the general public may attend the introductory training on state Environmental Quality Review procedure. County planning department staff will instruct the course from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 1, in Legislative Chambers, 160 Genesee St., Auburn.
Pre-registration is required. To reserve space, call Amy D'Angelo at 253-1276 or send an e-mail to adangelo@co.cayuga.ny.us.
State sending STAR Rebate applications
The state Department of Taxation and Finance began mailing out Middle Class STAR Rebate applications this month.
Letters will be sent to eligible homeowners regionally. Seniors 65 and older receiving enhanced STAR benefits do not need to apply.
Staggering the notices will allow the state to manage homeowner inquiries and applications. The applications, also available on the Web at www.nystax.gov, can be submitted through November.
Upstate homeowners earning $90,000 or less will receive rebates on a sliding scale. For more information, call the STAR hot line at (877) 678-2769.
Literacy training classes to begin
Literacy Volunteers of Cayuga County will hold tutor training classes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Six classes, held at 6:30 p.m. in the Literacy Volunteers Office located in the Willard Chapel Building, 17 Nelson St., Auburn, over three weeks with a follow-up session three weeks after the sixth session, will instruct volunteers on the free, one-on-one, confidential tutoring for adults in Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language.
Completion of all sessions is required before a student is assigned. For more information, call 253-5241.
SU gets technical training grant
Syracuse University received a $123,694 Technical Assistance Training Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency recently.
The grant will be used to support the university's Environmental Finance Center which provides training and technical assistance for water and wastewater management through the Public Management and Finance Program. The program works closely with the Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative, a public-private partnership that intends to protect the lake's shoreline.
