All it took was one run.
The Auburn Doubledays pitching staff was masterful against Oneonta in the New York-Penn League playoff opener. Brett Cecil, Cody Crowell and Michael Barbara pitched a shutout into the 11th inning Sunday, but were matched every step of the way by Tiger hurlers Jonathan Kibler, Erik Crichton and Rudy Darrow.
But after working two scoreless innings, Barbara gave up back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 11th and walked the bases loaded. Reliever Nate Melek was brought in to try and extend the game but immediately surrendered the game-winning hit to Michael Sullivan and Oneonta defeated Auburn 1-0 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
The Doubledays return home today for Game 2, which begins at 7 p.m.
Auburn managed just four hits in the contest and stranded a runner on third in each the ninth and 10th innings.
Cecil, Crowell and Barbara combined for 11 strikeouts in the loss.
