Local artist to show an ‘empire' of work
An art gallery opening reception for the artwork of local artist Alan Alger will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Auburn Public Theater, 108 Genesee St., Auburn.
Alger's exhibit, “Empire,” is a mixture of ancient, modern and futuristic styles. The show is set up to look like a historical exhibit of a once beautiful and mysterious empire. The exhibit includes the following themes: knights, queens and kings, cloak and dagger, fire and brimstone, good and evil, love and hate, war and death.
This exhibit is free and open to the public. Alger's work may be previewed at www.auburnpublictheater.com.

Ski club to hold first seasonal meeting
The Finger Lakes Ski Club will hold its first meeting of the new season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 11, at the Knights of Columbus, Market Street, Auburn. Jim D'Angelo from the Sterling Nature Center will speak. Pizza will be served at 7 p.m., and activities and trips for the upcoming year will be presented. The meeting is open to the public.
Museum receives conservation grant
The Cayuga Museum of History and Art has received a grant from the Lower Hudson Conference in the amount of $6,682 towards conservation of an 1850s portrait of children from the Beardsley family painted by a New York itinerant painter. The painting depicts three young children, formally dressed, in a style similar to that of New York itinerant painters Edwin Weyburn Goodwin and Ammi Phillips. The portrait will be cleaned and repaired by Westlake Conservators of Skaneateles, New York.
Seniors planning trip out of town
The Owasco Seniors are planning a trip to the Cortland Country Music Park on Nov. 18. The bus will depart at 11:30 from Stryker Homes and noon from the firehouse in the hamlet of Owasco. They will arrive at the Country Music Park in Cortland at 12:45 p.m., The afternoon will start with a chicken and biscuit dinner, followed by the show, “Tribute to Alan Jackson and Martina McBride.” They will be back in Auburn at about 6:15 p.m.,

Central New York bonsai show held
The annual Bonsai Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Liverpool Public Library, 310 Tulip St., Liverpool. The show is sponsored by the Bonsai Club of Central New York.
This annual show displays club members' trees. Also prebonsai and bonsai related items will be for sale.

The Aurora Free Library has announced that it will again host the Book Lover's Ball at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. The fourth annual gala event takes place at the Aurora Inn, 391 Main St., Aurora. All proceeds benefit the historic preservation of the Aurora Free Library and the Morgan Opera House. Tickets are now on sale for $75 per person; call chairwoman Denise Brady at 364-5488 to reserve tickets.
