AUBURN - Two of the most recognizable names in the central New York music scene will be together again this Saturday, at the Belvedere Lounge on State Street.
Ron Spencer has been one of the best-known, and popular, guitarists in this area over the past 20 years. He's played with local stalwarts such as Mark Doyle, Pete McMahon, Kim Lembo, Jimmy Cavallo and Joe Whiting, and some of the nationally recognized names he's been on stage with include bluesmen Charlie Musselwhite and John Copeland.
Joining Spencer for the show will be Tom Townsley, an exceptional harmonica player.
“It's swing oriented, jump blues stuff,” said Spencer.
The Ron Spencer Band and Townsley will play a mix of blues, rock 'n' roll and R&B. Joining them will be bassist Jay Gould, Ross Mole on drums, and singer Mark Gibson, who fronts Spencer's larger band, Jumpstart.
There is no cover charge, food will be available and drink prices are reasonable.
Spencer is a long-time regular at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in downtown Syracuse, and former Muddy Waters guitarist Bob Margolin recently praised Spencer for his guitar skills that “stand out from the pack for exceptional taste, tone and fire.”
Mickey Gauthier, the owner of the Belvedere Lounge, said he guarantees a solid show Saturday.
“We've been doing this every Saturday night all summer long. It's been going very good,” said Gauthier, an Auburn native who also owns Mickey's Collision and Big Kahunas.
“It's all outdoors, too. Everybody likes to be outdoors.”
The Belevedere has had a busy summer so far with Phil Petroff, Kim Fetters, Joe Whiting and Loren Barriger, among those having played Saturday night shows.
Spencer has been playing professionally since the early 1980s. He last played in Auburn this spring at Polish Falcons. His friendship with Townsley is a long one, and they've been sharing a stage more often in recent years.
“If he's available, I'll try to include him,” said Spencer. “We do some of our stuff, we do some of his stuff.”
