Something is terribly wrong. I just woke up from a bad dream where it was September already! A fun and eventful summer has come and gone in a blur, and it's back to packing lunches, checking homework and operating “Mom's Taxi Service.”
We sure enjoyed many great events and happenings in Weedsport this summer: the annual Fireman's Field Days, the Cayuga County Fair, a village-wide garage sale, the dedication of Trolley Park and the aptly named Nellie Kinney Pavilion, the dedication of a new mural at the Old Brutus Historical Society, a facelift at Whittler's Green (thanks to some hard-working members of our community) and wonderful entertainment at the Gazebo Gatherings, just to name a few. The Gazebo Gatherings experienced only one rain-out, mind you, and of course it was our band (Too Old to Rap); however, the Weedsport Library provided a fantastic atmosphere to play inside and we had a great time, so a big thank you to them.
Weedsport churches worked together to provide another fun and successful Vacation Bible School in August, with about 70 children enjoying a beach theme for the week, and the Town of Brutus Recreation Commission did a great job again this year with its summer recreation schedule. It's always nice to see children out playing with big smiles on their faces.
Well, it's the end of an era in our village, one might say, with the retirement of Sandi and Charlie Kreplin. Sandi was the clerk/treasurer for 30 years, and Charlie has been a member of the volunteer fire department for 50 years. Their service was celebrated on two separate occasions with a party for Sandi at Trolley Park and an open house for Charlie at the firehouse. The Kreplins are sure to keep busy in their retirement with travel and family; we wish them both all the best and thank them for their dedication and hard work in keeping Weedsport a great place to live. Along those lines, we also wish to welcome Diane Schufele as our new village treasurer.
Since it is September, it's time again to keep everyone up-to-date on what's going on in our school district. Of course, our football, cross-country and field hockey teams have been working for quite awhile already to prepare for their seasons, and we'd like to congratulate the field hockey team for their championship in the new Cayuga County tournament. There's no better way to enjoy a nice fall day than going out to support our Warrior teams.
The Weedsport Association of Parents and Teachers will begin another year of service to our district with its first meeting held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the high school board room. All parents are invited to attend and see what the A.P.T. is all about; trust me, this is a fun and energetic bunch of people who really care about their school. A.P.T. meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The annual wrapping paper/gift sale kick-off is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 20 and is A.P.T.'s biggest fundraiser of the school year. A.P.T. dance registration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 22, noon in the high school cafeteria.
The Elementary School Open House will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. During the open house, students will be able to sign up for Girl Scouts, visit the book fair in the cafetorium and introduce their families to their teachers and friends.
In remembrance of Patriot Day, a ceremony and candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the high school parking lot. Everyone is invited to attend; please bring a candle and a lawn chair. The ceremony will be held in the auditorium in case of inclement weather.
Finally, a reminder now that school is back in session: please drive extra carefully through the village, especially as students are arriving at school in the morning and walking home in the afternoon. Keep a watchful eye out for those cute little ones with the Dora the Explorer backpacks, as well as the tall ones with the cell phones attached to their ears! Welcome back to school, everyone.
