A routine traffic stop this week resulted in an Auburn man being sent to Cayuga County Jail on drug charges.
Auburn city police said an officer on patrol Tuesday evening saw a black 1996 Pontiac fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Washington and Orchard streets, and stopped the car on West Street.

As the officer walked up to the car, police said the driver, Matthew A. Carnicelli, 19, of 101 Franklin St., Auburn, initially drove away before stopping about 25 feet down the road.

Police said the officer could smell marijuana in the car and asked Carnicelli if he had any drugs, at which point Carnicelli handed over a bag containing 13.6 grams of marijuana. As the officer searched Carnicelli, police said, the officer discovered 2.6 grams of cocaine.

Carnicelli was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana and traffic violations. He was arraigned in Auburn City Court and sent to the county jail without bail.

Carnicelli's 17-year-old passenger was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. He was issued an appearance ticket and released.
