Fear of water a major challenge for profession
Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Julia Fuentes, a swim instructor at the Cato-Meridian Community Recreation Center.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Watching the progress students make by the time our sessions are done.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. When students are downright afraid of the water.
Q. Describe your ideal workout.
A. Just being able to have enough time to have a quiet and focused workout would suit me fine without worrying about my kids.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. The usual, eat less and eat good food and move more. Don't worry about numbers as much as feeling healthy. Also, set realistic and short-term goals. Don't get discouraged. The changes you make should be ones you're willing to keep for a lifetime, so make them good changes.
Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from people in your classes?
A. That they'll never get “it.” Whatever “it” happens to be for that particular lesson: floating, elementary back stroke, etc.
Q. What would be your dream job, and in what part of the world would you be working?
A. Working on a cruise ship. Going all around the tropical islands. Hey, I can dream.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. Prepare to be pruny! Love the water and the teaching.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. Stay healthy!
Q. What do you like most about living and/or working in the Finger Lakes?
A. The beauty of Lake Ontario and the change of seasons in the northeastern part of the country.
Q. What would people who think they know you be most surprised to find out about you?
A. I don't like wax museums. The figures scare me!
