With the approach of fall, Auburn and Cayuga County fans are getting hungry for the good old pastime of fisticuffing. Well within the next two weeks, boxing is to be resumed at the old stamping grounds of the Auburn Amateur Athletic Club on Garden Street.

Grim-faced National Guardsmen following orders of Gov. Orval Faubus, today forcibly prevented racial desegregation of Little Rock Cental High School in Arkansas. The soldiers armed with rifles and carbines, turned back a total of nine Negro students who tried to enter the 2,000 pupil all-white school.

Teachers in four Cayuga County school districts went back to work without contracts this year. Three of the county's nine districts, Port Byron, Southern Cayuga and Moravia, have been without contracts since June 30, 1996.

More than 300 animals belonging to the Gilfus Family could be returned to their Sarr Road farm in accordance with a last-minute agreement that was reached Tuesday morning. Cayuga County Judge Peter Corning said there will be no trial and that all five of the Gilfuses have reached an agreement with the county. Richard Sr., 61, Patricia, 60, Richard Jr., 36, and John, 28, each plead guilty
to four counts of failure to provide sustenance to an animal. Lisa Gilfus, 31, plead guilty to one count of the same charge.
