TOWN OF ESOPUS - The Ulster County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 43-year-old Kingston man who was struck and killed by a freight train.
The victim's identity is being held until family members are notified and an autopsy is conducted.
“We're still investigating what his actions were prior to the accident, and we won't have that completed until probably Monday,” Undersheriff Frank Faluotico Jr. said.
Deputies who responded to the call at 8:44 a.m. Saturday found the victim on the tracks, deceased, police said.
A northbound CSX train struck the man in the Town of Esopus.
CSX spokesman Garrick Francis said the train was traveling from Richmond, Va., to Selkirk, near Albany, when the accident occurred. He did not know how fast the train was going at the time but said the speed limit on that stretch of track is 50 mph.
“Apparently he was lying down in the middle of the track and unfortunately was killed by the train,” Francis said.
