Resident buys paver block for vet park
E. Caroline Casper recently purchased a “paver block” for the new Veterans Memorial Park for her grandfather, Adolph Kasper, who was born in Richenburg, Austria, in 1841. He emigrated to the United States July 4, 1862, hoping to escape the war in Austria But when he arrived here, he became involved in the Civil War joining the Union Army on Jan. 22, 1864, enlisting in Company S. Sixteenth Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery. Upon his honorable discharge in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 31, he became a United States Citizen and lived in Auburn.
Casper remembers him telling of his Civil War experiences, especially how frightened he was during a terrible thunder storm on Lookout Mountain in Tennesee. He died at the age of 93 in Auburn.
Anyone wishing to purchase a paver block for a veteran may contact John Barwinczok at 253-6022.
