AUBURN - Leading the division has been a constant for the Auburn Doubledays since July 5, but on Saturday, it became official.

The Doubledays are Pinckney Division champs once again.

For those keeping track, that's six in a row, all under manager Dennis Holmberg. But unlike the last couple seasons, the Doubledays weren't playing catch up, they didn't have to get hot in August and they certainly didn't need to rely on the other five Pinckney division teams to lose.

They're just, well, good.

The Doubledays became the first New York-Penn League team to make reservations for the postseason after handily defeating Jamestown for the sixth time this season, 7-2.

“You start the season and hope to get better,” Holmberg said. “I don't know if anyone is that smart to know that you're going to end up with the division title. You play to make mistakes, you play to get better and learn from those mistakes. Before you succeed, you have to fail. And certainly, we've had our moments of that. There have been bumps in the road, just like any other team. Antonio (Caceres) has his pitcher and catcher meetings every day, we work on fundamentals every day - we just want everybody to get better. It's not just physically, it's mentally. There was nothing automatic about this.”

Even after going down 2-0 in the first inning to the Jammers, there were no fleeting thoughts of waiting another day for the celebration.

If the 2007 Doubledays can be summed up in one word, it's resilient.

Leance Soto, fresh off the disabled list, belted a two-run triple in the second to tie the score and Darin Mastroianni grounded out to score Ben Zeskind in the third to take the lead that would become permanent.

Auburn then made sure to take it's division title out with a bang when, with two outs in the sixth, Victor Santana crushed a two-run home run to right center field to also score JP Arencibia.

Two batters later, Zeskind hit his eighth homer of the year, well over the left field wall.

“In a game like this, you just hope to contribute and that fact that I got to do that, is amazing,” Zeskind said.

The left fielder also caught the pop-up in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

As the dugout and the bullpen ecstatically cleared onto the middle of the field, he took a second to reflect on what the team had accomplished.

“Being a part of this again was amazing,” said Zeskind, a second year Doubleday. “You don't get a lot of winning traditions in minor league baseball, but there really is one here. I mean six division championships in a row, it's so awesome to be a part of it.”

Nate Melek earned his fourth win of the season, going three innings and facing nine batters, striking out three of them.

Jammers' southpaw Jay Voss dropped his record to 0-7.

Second place Mahoning Valley defeated State College on Saturday, but because they lost on Friday night to the Spikes, the Doubledays' fate was in their own hands, just as it seemed to be all season.

With six games remaining in the regular season, the Doubledays (43-26) are 7.5 games ahead of the Scrappers.

“Sometimes, it's tough to sit on that perch and be chased, everybody is coming in and trying to knock you off,” Holmberg said. “You've got to give these guys a lot of credit, they didn't want to get knocked off that pedestal But it's not how you start, it's how you finish and we've still got games to play.”
