AUBURN - Symmetrical but distinct folded paper cutouts in vivid reds, yellows, blues and greens plastered onto Plexiglass panels brightened the white walls of the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center on Saturday.
The center opened on Saturday “Revelation: Lane Twitchell, Drawing & Painting,” an eight-week exhibition from Brooklyn contemporary artist Lane Twitchell.
Using intricately folded and cut pieces of paper - much like children making paper snow flakes - Twitchell references religion, landscape, suburbia and modern art.
“It's such an acceptable process,” said Stephanie Schuster, assistant director of the gallery. “People understand the concept. It's so intricate and complex with his artwork and the ideas behind them.”
It was the uniqueness of Twitchell's work, the layering and perspective that brought George and Nina Miller of Ithaca to the gallery.
“We find the technique interesting,” said Nina Miller “and the vivid quality of (the artwork).”
“It's layered and complex and that's not something you generally see in this area often,” said Anna Post, of Scipio, who works in Visitor Services at the gallery.
Born and raised as a Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah and currently living in New York City, Twitchell was attracted to exhibit in Auburn due to the city's proximity to Palmyra - home to Mormonist founder Joseph Smith Jr. and birthplace of the religion.
And on a local level, the gallery was happy to have him.
“It's a way for us to showcase emerging and fairly established in-state artists,” she said. She also said it was an opportunity for people in the region to see someone like this contemporary artist from New York City.
And for Schuster, the match couldn't have been better.
“Twitchell is very intrigued by things he views as serendipitous and coincidental,” she said. “It was a good match for us.”
And the Millers certainly agree. “I liked the artwork,” said George.
“It's a pleasant outing,” said Nina. “I enjoyed Twitchell's work very much and I like to support art museums.”
