Habitat for
Humanity seeks help

The Cayuga County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to do exterior painting, insulation and general clean-up at the project site on Wadsworth Street in Auburn. The volunteer group works from 5 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Eight to 12 volunteers are needed each day.

Chamber orchestra opens 31st season

The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra opens its 31st season at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, with an Orchestral Concert at Ford Hall, Ithaca College. The conductor will be Tomasz Golka, first of four candidates being auditioned for the position of CCO music director.

Works by Rossini and Mendelssohn will be performed. Also internationally acclaimed violinist Brian Lewis will appear as soloist in the first New York state performance of Michael McLean's violin concerto, “Elements,” dedicated to Lewis, who has recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra. Lewis will be available post-concert to sign CDs.

TomatoFest lines up great entertainment

TomatoFest will combine a two-day lineup of bands with fun activities for families and people interested in healthy food choices. Festival-goers can peruse several food vendors, make their own fruit salads and find out about the sugar content in their meals.

The festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, at Emerson Park, Owasco.

Falcon Sportsmen to hold meeting

The Falcon Sportsmen will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the clubhouse located at 2947 Turnpike Road in Sennett.

Meeting discussions will include the turkey shoot and the youth pheasant hunt.

Alliance group to sponsor family class

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Cayuga County will sponsor the NAMI Family-to-Family Education program specifically for families of people diagnosed with serious mental illness. The 12-week series of classes will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the second floor assembly room in Auburn Memorial Hospital.

The course will cover information about the major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. In addition, participants will learn techniques for coping, listening and problem solving.

Dance studio to host Christmas Carol

Rhythm in Motion Dance Studio will hold auditions for “The Christmas Carol” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 24 and Sept. 25, at First Love Ministries, 99 Wall St., Auburn. Be ready to sing, dance and read. Shows will be performed Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1.
