AUBURN - That '70s Band is playing Thursday at Hoopes Park. More than 30 years ago, three of its members first met just two blocks away.
Steve Bennett, Connie Daloia and Paul Liberatore were all second-graders at Herman Elementary School when they became friends. And they've stayed close pals ever since.
“We're fantastic friends. You can't ask for a better time than going out with your two best friends in the world and playing great music and having a good time,” said Liberatore, the band's keyboardist and backup vocalist.
The three played together in high school as part of Schizophrenia, and starting in the mid-1980s, they were well known in local clubs as Liquid Crystal.
Lead vocalist Jean Baer and lead guitarist John McGloon joined the band in the past year. Bear started after That '70s Band played its Hoopes Park show last summer, and McGloon talked music for several years with Bennett and Liberatore before joining around the first of the year.
McGloon auditioned to join the band two years ago, but the stars just didn't align.
“The audition went well, but I was moving into a house, and the timing just wasn't right,” McGloon said. “But last year, we just clicked. We all like each other and that's very important because we're in this band to have fun.”
The audience at Hoopes Park tonight will have fun as well. That '70's Band plays classic rock from not only that decade, but the '60s and '80s, too.
Jean Baer moved from San Diego to the Auburn area in January 2003. At 5-foot-3-inches, Baer still makes for a commanding stage presence.
Thursday's high-energy and family-friendly show is part of the city of Auburn's summer concert series. Unlike many of the concerts on Tuesday nights, there is no movie following That '70s Band's two-hour performance.
