First, Jesus said we will always have the poor with us.
Second, good works do not save us, Jesus does.
The Bible states, “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”
Also, “If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,' but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?”
Concerning judgment day everyone will be gathered; “and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides His sheep (Christian believers) from the goats (non-believers). And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to the sheep on His right hand, Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.”
The sheep questioned Jesus about their reward; and He states: “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”
