BATAVIA - The Genesee County Sheriff's department is trying to solve a crime that hit very close to home.
About $1,800 worth of video equipment was stolen from the department's brand new administrative office over the weekend. Investigators believe thieves got into the office late Friday or early Saturday and made off with a 23-inch flat screen TV, a 20-inch computer monitor and 10 DVD players.
William Ferrando, a department investigator, said there were no signs that anyone broke into the 19,000-square-foot building, which was only recently finished and is not yet occupied.
The burglars might have gotten in through a door that was left open, or they might have had a generic key, Ferrando said.
Sheriff Gary Maha told the Batavia News it appeared that more than one person was involved and that the thieves might have jumped a fence from a neighboring Veterans Administration property.
Genesee County is a rural, 500-square-mile chunk of farmland between Rochester and Buffalo that's home to about 60,000 people.
The sheriff's department expects to begin moving into its new office next month.
