Three arrested after fight in Auburn
Three people were arrested after a fight on Washington Street in Auburn Sunday morning.
Matthew C. Simmons, 26, was arrested after police were called to the scene. Simmons yelled at police using obscene language, Auburn Police said.
Officers found .6 grams of cocaine on Simmons and two tablets of a controlled substance after they subdued him in handcuffs, police said.
Simmons, of 2043 Dietrick Road in Union Springs, was arrested on two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a control substance, resisting arrest and two counts of disorderly conduct.
Sandra Ann Steigerwald was arrested for two counts for disorderly conduct. Benjamin D. Janas was arrested for disorderly conduct. Janas, 27, and Steigerwald, 27, were part of a crowd told to move on from watching the fight. Officers arrested them when they did not, according to police.
Nozzolio to present check for pool repair
State Sen. Michael Nozzolio will present a check for $200,000 for repairs to Casey Park Swimming Pool to city officials at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Casey Park pool. City leaders will use the New York State Department of State Grants for improvements to the pool, lighting and surrounding area.
Meals on Wheels raffle to begin
Meals on Wheels supporters have an opportunity to win $5,000 in a 50-50 raffle that will benefit the nonprofit organization.
The $5 tickets can be purchased at Cervo's News, Cases Unlimited, D&L Truck Stop or the Meals on Wheels kitchen in Auburn.
Remaining tickets can be purchased at TomatoFest, where the drawing is slated for 2:30 p.m. Sunday Sept. 9.
Lock committee to meet at Town Hall
The Locke Community Development and Park Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 12 at Town Hall.
The committee will be discussing plans for Millstone Park on Main Street.
Those who cannot attend can share their ideas by calling Town Supervisor Jean James at 497-3135.
City hall to return to fall hours
Auburn's Memorial City Hall will return to fall hours on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The building, 24 South St., will open the doors at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. throughout the rest of the year.
Anti-drug group awarded grant
U.S. Rep. Michael A. Arcuri, D-Utica, announced that the Partnership for a Drug-Free Auburn has been awarded a $100,000 federal grant from the Drug Free Communities Support Program last week.
The DFC program provide grants up to $500,000 over five years to community organizations that foster citizen participation in drug prevention efforts.
The Partnership for a Drug-Free Auburn is dedicated to prevent and reduce drug and alcohol abuse by Auburn youths using informational, environmental and early intervention strategies to improve community risk factors and promote protective factors.
Aurelius planning board to meet
The Aurelius Town Planning Board will discuss current development projects at a meeting Monday Sept. 10.
The board will meet at 7:45 p.m. in Aurelius Town Hall, 1241 West Genesee St. Road, Auburn.
