Nearly 50 people stood along Pulaski Street, some in pajamas, Wednesday night watching the Auburn Fire Department tackle a blaze in a two-story house at about 10:30.
All the occupants left the home and no injuries were reported, Fire Chief Mike Hammon said.
The fire, in the house near the corner of Chase and Pulaski streets, was contained to the attic, Hammon said. Unfortunately, the items the families stored in the attic prevented firefighters from reaching the fire immediately, he added.
Aurelius Fire Department assisted with the blaze.
Emergency responders blocked off Pulaski at State Street with orange cones and barrels to prevent more traffic from coming onto the water-soaked street.
Dennis Quimby's two daughters live in the two units of the house. He went into the attic after his daughter told him there was smoke coming from one of the fixtures. The families were going to bed at the time.
Quimby thinks the cause is electrical, but Hammon said the department won't make that determination until later. Quimby is not the owner of the property.
