The Auburn Players Community Theatre will kick off its 2007-08 season this weekend with a youthful adaptation of “Seussical Jr.”
The Auburn Players Youth Theatre will open “Seussical Jr.” Friday, at Cayuga Community College. For the fourth consecutive year, a cast of central New Yorkers under 18 will perform.
“The reason we started it was whenever our annual musical came around, younger and younger people wanted to get involved,” said Elisa Hunt, who has directed the youth group's show in each of its first four years. “They're all fairy tale-related or something that will be fun for the entire family.
“Our cast and auditions have grown,” she said.
About 50 children and teens will sing and dance their way through musical numbers crafted from 15 Dr. Seuss story lines. Hunt directed the first youth performance that drew about 20 for the audition.
The production will feature appearances by the Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle, the Grinch, Horton and many other character's made famous by the children's author. The original Broadway “Seussical” was crafted by the same Tony Award-winning team that wrote “Ragtime” and “Once on This Island.”
The CCC Theater audience can expect a high-caliber performance by the youth set, the youngest of which is 8, Hunt said.
“It's a lot of fun,” she said. “It's a script the kids have enjoyed right from the beginning, and I think that shows in their performances.”
The Auburn Players Community Theatre season will continue with the Second Stage Play Festival at the Auburn Public Theater in October. The festival will feature work for local playwrights.
In November and December, a musical revue of show tunes directed by longtime players Grace Lentini and Don Whitman will honor the group's 47th anniversary. Since beginning in 1961, the Auburn Players Community Theatre has claimed awards from the Theatre Association of New York and the Eastern States Theatre Association.
The players will put on performances of “All My Sons,” by Arthur Miller, in January 2008 and “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” by Neil Simon, in April 2008.
“The Pajama Game” will close things out in June 2008.
