Techniques for eliminating stress

Health and wellness tip of the month: reduce stress.
Though it's easier said than done, stress-busters come in many forms.

One technique recommended by experts is to think positive thoughts. Another is to exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes per day at a gym, with group classes or at home.

You'll feel yourself get more energy and a better night's sleep, and you'll enjoy the benefits of the mood-enhancing endorphins your body releases as you exercise.

Skaneateles has many great health and fitness center membership options, including the Skaneateles Community Center, Snap Fitness and Spa Mirbeau.

On days that you are not doing formal exercise, make time to spend 30 minutes doing something you enjoy.

For example, soak in a bath or hot tub. You can also take a leisurely walk by the lake and on the village sidewalks, stroll or hike a trail at beautiful Bear Swamp, read a good book outside or in a spot with a view, or walk and play with your dog at Austin Park.

Listen to soothing music, watch a funny TV show or movie. Get a massage, nail service or facial at one of Skaneateles' many salons or at a spa, and meditate or just enjoy quiet time to think.

Try simple things as well, such as counting to 10 before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible.

All of these stress-buster tips seem very simple, but think about how many days of the week you make time for at least one or more of them. Once you are able to reduce stress, many other components of your overall health will improve as well.
