WEEDSPORT - Locks of Love is a national nonprofit organization that was founded with one mission: to provide a sense of self confidence and normalcy to children suffering from medical hair loss as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and alopecia areata.

The girls of Weedsport Girls Scouts Troop 1028, along with the rest of the organization, decided it was time to do something to lend a helping hand to this worthy cause.

On Sunday afternoon, the girls hosted a hair cutting and gathering at the First Presbyterian Church.

“The idea was presented to all the leaders,” said Dawn Thompson, a scout leader who helped organize the event. “And then we took the idea to the girls and they were all about it, this was something they really wanted to do.”

Knowing that their efforts were going to such a good cause made many of the girls eager to help out however they could.

“I like to help people,” Lexi Appleby, 8, said. “It is nice to know that what we are doing is helping people.”

Many of the scouts lent a helping hand by making and selling goods for a bake sale and hosting a face-painting table to help raise funds to ship the collected hair to Locks of Love, which is located in Florida.

“We made a lot of cookies,” Cassie McIntyre, 11, said. “Brownies, lots and lots of brownies, muffins, bread. We did a lot of cooking. It feels very, very good to do this to help people.”

Locks of Love is a cause that Julie Thompson, of the Yankee Clipper, in Skaneateles, is very familiar with.

She said that the shop regularly makes contributions to Locks of Love.

When she was contacted, she said she was more than happy to help out.

“It is well worth it,” Julie said. “This is something that we do a lot and it is such a good cause. I think it is wonderful they are doing this and I'm happy to be able to help.”

The event drew some admittedly hesitant but very willing volunteers to the barber's chair.

“At first I was a little apprehensive,” said Karen Williams, of Elbridge. “The scout coordinator's son and my son play football together so they asked me. After that I ran into a gentleman who actually grows his hair for Locks of Love and I thought twice in two days, maybe I should do this. I really think it is a great idea.”

While the hair collected is certainly going towards a good cause, Thompson hoped that the scouts could take a great lesson away from this experience.

“I hope they can get something out of it Thompson said. ”That is a big goal is to show the girls that they can do something good for other people.“
