Event to teach good health choices
The Central New York Diabetes Prevention Partnership is teaming up with the Cayuga Community Health Network Inc. for a Lunch and Learn Series.
The free event will teach people how to make positive choices for their health. They will happen at noon each Thursday at the Knights of Columbus, 47 Market St., Auburn.
Organizers will serve lunch. Talks will last about an hour.
The next session is Thursday, Aug. 30.

Heart Expo to be held at AMH
People can participate in the annual Heart Expo from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Auburn Memorial Hospital. The event will offer free cholesterol testing during the first half, free pulmonary function tests, and blood pressure screenings. Restaurants and food producers will provide samples of heart-healthy food.
Health care professionals and pharmaceutical company representatives will present information.
Programs for children include cartoon characters, tours of a Mercy Flight helicopter, a TLC ambulance and fire engine.
A grandparent and grandchildren walk will run from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and photos will be taken.

State departments to hold hearing
The state departments of Health and Insurance will have a public hearing in Syracuse this November for input on a reform initiative dubbed New York's Partnership for Coverage.
The program aims to develop a high-quality, cost-effective health care system, increase access to insurance and identify a sustainable model for universal coverage. There will be hearings on proposals to achieve those goals in five upstate cities this fall.
A public hearing is slated for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 13 at Onondaga Community College, Syracuse.
Child Care Council awarded state grant
The Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes was awarded a $140,425 state grant to serve as the child care referral service for Cayuga and Seneca counties for the next five years Wednesday.
The state Office of Children and Family Services will distribute more than $21 million to nonprofit child care resource and referral agencies across the state. These agencies refer parents to child care, distribute information, offer technical assistance to providers and provide monitoring and oversight of caregivers, according to a press release from the office of Gov. Eliot Spitzer.
The state has funded these services in every county across the state since 1991.
Swim Owasco to start on Labor Day
Dive into Owasco Lake on Labor Day for the annual Swim Owasco one-mile swim from Indian Cove to Cascade. Entry forms are available in Auburn at the YMCA, the Tourist Office and Emerson Park; in Moravia at the Modern Market, Granny's Gas Station, New Creations Hair Salon; and Cascade on Owasco at the South Shore Marina and Cascade Grill.
The deadline to register for the swim is Friday, Aug. 31. The swim is not a race and is open to all ages. There will be a pancake breakfast awaiting participants at the Cascade Grill, and all will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
