SENNETT -- Two Cayuga County sheriff deputies walked away with an honor attesting praise for their compassion and bravery, but the fact that they saved a man's life was the biggest award.
State Assemblyman Gary Finch presented Cayuga County Sheriff Deputies David Harkness and Timothy Axton with the state Assembly Medals of Merit for saving a man from drowning in April.
On April 23, the partners were transporting a man to the Cayuga County Jail when they came upon a one-car accident.
An upside down sports utility vehicle trapped a man's head in a roadside pond, full with rain water. Harkness "got (his) boots wet" and walked into the pond while Axton called for emergency responders, he said. Harkness and a passerby lifted the car off the man, and he was able to get out from under it. The driver suffered a broken neck.
Throop and Sennett fire departments both attended to the scene. Axton said he and Harkness came upon the scene 30 seconds after the victim lost control of his car along County House Road.
