With Michael Quill's registration on an independent line, voters will have three choices for Auburn mayor, no matter the results of the Democratic Party's primary.
Quill turned in more than 600 signatures to run on an unestablished line; he titled his line “Team America.”
The retired Auburn fire chief received the Cayuga County Democratic Party Committee nomination for mayor, but will face Auburn City Councilor David Dempsey in a primary next month.
The Cayuga County Independence Party has endorsed Dempsey.
Now, both he and Dempsey will challenge Republican incumbent Timothy Lattimore, who is also running on the Conservative Party line.
Quill collected nearly 200 more signatures than needed to ensure a place on the ballot. The Cayuga County Board of Elections required about 420.
To run on an established party line, people need to collect 5 percent of the registered members of the party.
For an independent line, candidates need to gather 5 percent of the total number of ballots cast in the last governor's election.
