The civil service hearing for a Cayuga County Sheriff's lieutenant suspended since March will continue in two weeks.
A hearing officer appointed by Cayuga County listened to a few hours of testimony Wednesday in Auburn. Lt. James Langler was suspended this spring following allegations he used his position to grant promotions and privileges in exchange for support of incumbent Sheriff Rob Outhouse in the 2006 campaign.
Outhouse lost the November 2006 election to David Gould.
Langler sought a grievance and arbitration process instead of the ongoing Section 75 civil service hearing, which provides due process to employees involved in disciplinary matters. But a judge denied the motion in June.
"The hearing will reconvene Sept. 7 and likely conclude then," said Randy Ray, the county's labor attorney Thursday.
Ray could not comment further on the private hearing.
At the conclusion, the hearing officer will submit a recommendation to County Attorney Fred Westphal, who will issue the final decision, Ray said.
Langler, who denied the allegations against him and said he's being targeted for his support of Outhouse, has worked for 15 years for the sheriff's office, following stints with the U.S. Marine Corps and the Fairfax County (Va.) Police Department.
