Rindfleisch likes making people's work easier
Each Monday, The Citizen features someone from the Finger Lakes community.

This week, we spotlight Andy Rindfleisch of Welch Allyn.

Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A. Helping people. It's great to work with someone and streamline their job so they can be more effective. For example, we created a forecast automation tool that lets you forecast a part in six seconds instead of 60 seconds, which, over thousands of parts, is a lot of time.

Q. What is the most challenging?

A. Listening to folks and trying to determine their needs. You really need to be careful not to jump to a solution when you should be trying to fully understand the problem.

Q. What would be your dream job, and in what part of the world would you be working?

A. This may sound funny, but I have my dream job, and it's in the ideal spot - here. Welch Allyn is a great company doing wonderful things for people. We created an ear screener to help detect hearing problems in infants. And my job is to help people do their jobs easier, faster and better. What could be more fun then that? I've traveled a lot for Welch Allyn, and I love all the places I've been, but you can't beat central New York. We have the four seasons, the Finger Lakes, we're in the country - but close to some major cities.

Q. What's the best way to relax after a tough day?

A. I enjoy working around the house. Its fun to do something physical, and I derive a sense of accomplishment.

Q. What do you like most about the Finger Lakes?

A. It offers a taste of everything. We live in the “sticks,” but we are minutes from Auburn, Ithaca, Seneca Falls - and a short drive to Rochester or Syracuse. Even New York City, Boston and Philadelphia are easy drives.

Q. If you had the choice of meeting any three people in the world, who would they be?

A. Pope Benedict XVI, Stephen Hawking - the physicist - and President Bush. I think they represent the most spiritual, intelligent and powerful people in their class. Seems like you could learn a lot from these folks.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

A. Having fun at home and pounding away at work (a lot like where I am now).

Q. If you were to win the lottery tomorrow, what's the first thing you'd do?

A. Give some to the children, some to charity and invest some. Maybe pave the driveway - not sure about that.

Q. If you were mayor or supervisor of your town/city, what's the first thing you'd change?

A. I think we need to foster a better business atmosphere to create more jobs - especially for young people.
