MGR rep elected to tourism board
Jessica Cantu was elected to the board of directors of the Cayuga County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CCCVB) Aug. 7.

Cantu is the box office manager for the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse.

She performs with the Actors' Speakeasy, a professional actors theater group, dedicated to creating and sharing intelligent and provocative theater in the Finger Lakes region.

Additionally, Cantu sits on the board of directors for the Absolute Dance Company, a not-for-profit organization.

Direct care staff at ARC honored

Seneca Cayuga ARC announce that Lena Thompson has been selected as the agency's nominee for the Thomas A. Maul Direct Support Excellence Award.

Thompson senior community services assistant, was one of 11 staff nominated by their peers for consideration.

The selection was made by a committee of agency direct care staff.

This award was just recently established to give NYSARC, Inc. chapters throughout the state the opportunity to recognize a direct support professional who has demonstrated an exemplary level of performance in the course of his or her employment and who has consistently demonstrated a commitment to improving the quality of life for people who have intellectual or other developmental disabilities.

The award is in the amount of $2,500 per recipient.

Clark nominated for Emmy Award

Cici Clark, a 1988 graduate of Skaneateles High School and the associate producer with ArgoFilms on “Chimpanzees: An Unnatural History,” a film about chimpanzees in captivity in North America, has been nominated for an Emmy.

Clark and fellow researcher Allison Argo are listed under the nominations for outstanding individual achievement in research.

They face four other nominations in the category, including shows that have aired on HBO and the History Channel.

The show, which premiered on PBS in November 2006, focuses on how society has used chimps in space, as entertainment and for medical research - and what happens to them after they've served that purpose.

It kicked off the 25th anniversary season of Thirteen/WNET New York's NATURE series.

Falcon club to offer hunter safety class

The Falcon Sportsmen Club, 2947 Turnpike Road, Auburn will host a hunter safety class from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.

Participants must register in person to pick up registration form and study materials. Register at the Camillus Gun & Archery Shop, 1404 Route 5 East, Elbridge.

This class is required for all first time hunters before a hunting license is purchased.

There is no charge for the class. Class size is limited, and participants must attend both sessions. Students 11 years old must have an adult attend the class with them at all times.
