PLATTSBURGH - A fast moving storm passed through Clinton County Thursday, downing trees, power and telephone lines and overturning a tractor trailer on the Northway.
The northbound lanes of Interstate 87 were closed shortly before 5 p.m. after the tractor trailer crashed, state police said. The Northway was reopened at about 6 p.m.
Police had no reports late Thursday of injuries or deaths in connection with the storm, which focused on areas north of Plattsburgh.
Carolyn Calderaro was relaxing at her Cumberland Head home, 143 miles north of Albany, when she heard the storm coming.
“I was shutting the windows because there was so much rain coming in,” she told The Plattsburgh Press Republican. “And then I saw a shadow coming, and then I saw the tree falling.”
A 100-foot pine tree landed on the roof of her house.
“I was so scared,” Calderaro said. “I didn't know what to do. I hid in the bathroom with my pets.”
Eric Day, Clinton County Emergency Services Director, said about 3,000 customers were without power in Beekmantown and Plattsburgh. Officials from New York State Electric and Gas did not answer calls from The Associated Press late Thursday.
Day said most of the roads in Clinton County had reopened by 9 p.m.
