A casino at Emerson Park would be big tourist draw

Would you agree that the underutilization of a prime asset is, to say the least, inexcusable?
Such a property exists in Owasco - the Emerson Park - one of the most prime assets in Cayuga County, which was once a flourishing place.

Big bands from all over the county played at the Pavilion. There was a magnificent merry-go-round with handmade horses imported from Germany, I was told. Their was the smallest railroad in the word and the penny arcade.

A thriving, bustling community which drew people to Auburn and greatly made the downtown area become alive.

Thanks to the efforts of the Merry-Go-Round and Dr. Karpinski, the utilization of the park is beginning to grow, and grow we must - we cannot remain stagnant in an ever-changing world. Tourism seems to me to be one of the various entrances to achieve our niche the realities of life are harsh and we must make decisions on the greater good.

To that degree, a suggestion recently made to me makes sense. He suggested that a “Casino in the Park” or a “Casino on the Lake” would be ideal.

After the Merry-Go-Round play ends, people could socialize with friends at the “casino.” It would be an ideal meeting place. It could fast become a “social destination spot,” and become a one-stop evening night out.

It would inhibit the outflux of the county residents going to neighboring counties (by the way, in droves) and increase the influx of people wanting to come here. I understand the concerns some people may have, but I believe the good outweighs the bad.

I visualize the “Casino in the Park” as a magnificent jewel in a magnificent setting.

Can this be accomplished? Why not!

" You must be outta your frickin' mind! A casino?!?! In Emerson Park??? Yeah, RIGHT! Where would you put the parking? Oh right--bulldoze the trees by the mini market, or across the street! SO much for the beauty of that area! And what would happen to the theater--a fine outlet of the Arts, and a "jewel" itself of the kind that characterizes a small town? GONE, I guarantee you, within the space of a year, to make room for more floor space for the professional thieves that are Casino Operators! Crack another bottle, Lucy, and DREAM ON!!! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!!!!!!! "

" I don't mind entertaining the idea of a casino however, not close to an education environment such as the high school or any school for that matter. I can see something of that nature in the outlying area of Auburn, but not less than a mile from a school. "
