Two Cents

As far as local politics this November, I usually vote but this year I doubt it. I forget who's running - two insurance men, a fireman and a partridge in a pear tree.
I approve of the city manager's proposed trash collection plan because I have seen how well it works elsewhere. We should also stop having thousands of tons of trash brought into the heart of the Finger Lakes Region by shutting down the city dump and shipping our trash out.

Why can't we have more police patrol on West Genesee Street, in the evening. It's just like a race track with cars racing on Jefferson Street, with the motorcycles.

Just a note--I don't care how hot it gets in the summer or how cold and snowy in the winter. I love our changing seasons and I think this is the greatest area to live in.

Unfortunately, children probably spend less than an hour in church a week. They spend more time with family, friends and the television.

Why do they allow alcohol at The Great Race but not at the Fourth of July celebration and fireworks?

It has been a major disappointment that trash is being dumped in the Finger Lakes region. Dumping trash near here from other places just for the government to make a little money is an outrage that should be stopped before the Finger Lakes region gets polluted causing the environment to react forcefully.

The new BOCES Campus is awesome.

Was the reason The Citizen's editor did not mention the county officials' names in his view on open meeting laws, in Sunday's paper, because they are all Republicans who are used to backroom politics.

Only in a male-dominated society would a famous feminist's mansion be razed and replaced with a male urinary clinic. That one action speaks a million words about us, doesn't it?

Did you know that wood smoke particulates are 12 times more toxic than second hand cigarette smoke? Within city limits where houses are side by side, no outdoor burning (besides barbecues) should be allowed, but a few self-centered people do not stop to think that their neighbors' lungs are distressed by hours of smoldering.

I remember when every Monday I saw the crows all across my street picking at whatever garbage they could pick at. It seems that last year a fairly good job was completed by scaring away most of them, although I miss them being around.

Unmistakably there has been a large amount of commotion on what to do about the unbelievable land claims of the Indians. The Indians would do much better blending in with the United States than starting waste-of-money gambling facilities near our cities, disturbing the citizens of New York.

For those who have competed in the Great Race, excellent job. For the ones who watched the Great Race you did a terrific job supporting the runners, bikers and canoers.

I just believe that Joe Torre for manager of New York Yankees, even though they're on a winning streak and been playing fairly well, I think it's time that he quit milking the team and step out of the way and let somebody else go for it. The only reason he's made all the money he has is because of the players, and I'd rather see a new manager in there.

I think the noise ordinance should be stricter. I'm so sick of being kept awake after midnight by loud drunks sitting on their porch until sunrise.

If you really want to rebuild bridges here, just tell Bush Cayuga County is part of Iraq and you will get the money tomorrow.

Only twice in the history of movies has a fictional movie character found a duplicate in real life. The first was “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” with Jimmy Stewart's role becoming councilor Matt Smith in Auburn, and the second is Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals this year, becoming Roy Hobbs' role in “The Natural.”

The reason it takes so long to settle an estate, no pun intended, is that attorneys make a killing.

To the male coaches and parents of last Wednesday night's softball game: part of the definition of class is “do unto others as you would have done to yourself.” Nothing unsportsmanship like was done on purpose, as we were focusing on celebrating a great season, not stroking the male egos on the other side.

" Yes it begins with good parenting but since 1/2 of Auburn has no good parents then the next best thing is a church--no matter what religion...since we certainly don't want to discriminate! "

" The indians are disturbing New York state? They were more than disturbed when we took their land and committed genocide on the entire race. "

" Whats wrong with Little League or Any of Our Youth Sports? Just take a look at the Parents---Wait a minute instead of doing something positive I'll just Complain and teach My Child how to Win with-out being a Competitor / just a Complainer like Mom and Dad-- It really Hits Home when the Child gets to High School when Mom and Dad Can't be there to watch every little upsetting thing thats happens to the Child. Remember " The Apple doesn't fall far from the Tree" "

" What is your explanation of the numerous accounts of sexual activitity with young boys by Catholic priests, Murry Lynch? God's will, ( probably a very popular justification, The devil made me do it, some kind of mental defect, very serious repressed issues from childhood, simply a matter of choice, other? "

" If we're going to pick on the city's public speaker policy, how about the county where you need a legislator's approval at their meeting? Then try addressing the state legislature or Congress and see how far you get. Everyone has a right to speak but I also think one person should respect the rights of others who want time. And didn't a former Mayor (now columnist) use the police to remove people from council meetings? "

" Our landfill should stay open but treated like a natural resource itself. Not opened up for cut rate dumping to make a little quick money. Have an enforced recycling program to limit the amount that is sent n the landfill. Think longterm not the business as usual quick fix. We are just now seeing a return on the methane collection. A digester is a step in the right direction. "

" Do not forget the importance of role models in the development of morals and ethics as well. The Little League Board of Directors should remember this when allowing the current board president to remain in control. Kids need to know that DWI is illegal, dangerous and not something to emulate. Wake up and remmeber that the league is about the kids, not the stroking of an adult ego. "

" The less time kids spend in Church, and the more time with their families the better! Morality and Ethics starts with good parenting, period. "
