A new community theater group opens its inaugural production this weekend. The Jordan-Elbridge Community Theater launches itself with the Stephen Sondheim musical, “Into the Woods,” this Friday and Saturday in the Jordan-Elbridge High School Auditorium, 5721 Hamilton Road, Jordan. The Merry-Go-Round Playhouse continues its run of the thoroughly enjoyable “Thoroughly Modern Millie” through Saturday and opens next Wednesday with the Fats Waller musical “Ain't Misbehavin.'” The season ends with “Always, Patsy Cline” Sept. 12 through 29. Hangar opens its final show of the season with the nutty comedy, described as literature class meets Monty Python, “All the Great Books: Abridged,” which opens Friday, Aug. 17, through Sept. 2, at the theater in Ithaca's Cass Park. This marks the end of an era at Hangar as Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty moves on to take the reins at the Dallas Theater Center. Moriarty took over at Hanger with the departure of Bob Moss to Syracuse Stage in 2001.
Moss himself is retiring this year, along with Stage Producing Director James C. Clark. Timothy Bond will take the helm at The central New York's only League of Resident Theaters (LORT) house in September, although Moss will stay on to direct “Les Liaisons Dangerous” and “The Lieutenant of Innishmore” this season.
Cortland Repertory Theater has “Almost, Maine” on the boards through this weekend, a charming look at the joys and pitfalls of romance in a small, New England town. With marvelous performances and crisp direction this is a unique play well worth your time. CRT wraps up its season with “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” Aug. 22 through Sept. 1. Interested individuals should come ready to act. No additional preparation is required; scripts will be provided. The plot is simple and slightly risque with machine gun quick repartee.
