Once again pilots and motorists are invited to fly or drive in to Owasco Airfield in Moravia for the second installment of the aviation and barbecue event.
Owasco Airfield Days began Wednesday and runs through Sunday this year.
“We got close to 300 people last year,” said Tom Brelsford, who owns the turf strip at 3900 Long Hill Road, Moravia. “I was pretty taken back by the amount of people.”
This year's festivities will include three more days to accommodate pilot camping. Things literally get cooking Saturday and Sunday with a barbecue and events, but the public is welcome to watch the action throughout the long weekend.
“Bring along a lawn chair and cooler and watch the planes,” Brelsford said.
The airfield is open from 9 a.m. to sunset each day. Saturday will include a spot landing contest that begins at 1 p.m.
“The spot landing contest is simply a line drawn on the runway, the pilots get two chances to land and whoever gets the closest to that line wins,” Brelsford said.
A “bomb drop” contest where pilots will attempt to drop objects on ground targets is also planned. All the while, the Long Hill Fire Department will be back with another barbecue starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
“They're going to be raising funds for a new fire truck, and it just happens to be their 30th anniversary,” Brelsford said.
A flea market is on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for good measure.
Brelsford, a Connecticut pilot, purchased the airfield and opened it to flight traffic in 2006. The Airfield Days are intended to introduce the next generation to aviation.
“The whole program is designed to introduce young people to aviation,” Brelsford said. “We're losing country airfields at an alarming rate and this is one that was saved.”
Ithaca's Experimental Aircraft Association will sponsor a Young Eagles rally Sunday. Children aged 8 to 17 will get the opportunity to learn from a senior American Airlines pilot and take a flight.
Boy Scout Troop 55, Moravia, will be on hand raising money with a bake sale and taking the opportunity to work on aviation merit badges.
