Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the
Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight Jen Gaul, a lifeguard at the Cato-Meridian Community Recreation Center.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Seeing a child smile after he or she overcomes a fear or struggle, like jumping into the pool for the first time.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. Watching someone struggle with an injury or disability.
Q. Describe your ideal workout.
A. Pilates for 20 minutes, running or jogging on a treadmill for 15 minutes, walking for 10 minutes and stretching.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. Find some sport or physical activity like swimming, tennis or biking that you love, and do it for 20 minutes every day. Make it your own personal time to de-stress and release your thoughts or energy.
Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from people in your classes?
A. Little kids learning to swim for the first time say, “If I get my face wet, I'll go blind.”
Q. What would be your dream job, and in what part of the world would you be working?
A. Teaching English somewhere in central New York. I love working with kids and the chaotic four seasons are great.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. Patience is the key.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. Lots of tea and a good book.
Q. What do you like most about the Finger Lakes?
A. The weather. It's always changing and forcing you to find something new and exciting to do.
Q. What would people who think they know you be most surprised to find out about you?
A. Everyone knows that I'm a low-maintenance girl, but I wouldn't be able to survive without body lotion after a couple hours in the pool.
