Spears' assistant believed to have information
An assistant to Britney Spears was subpoenaed Sunday to offer a statement in a legal matter concerning the pop star and ex-husband Kevin Federline, a lawyer said.

Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told The Associated Press that Alli Sims would be asked to give a deposition “in connection with the Britney Spears-Kevin Federline issue,” but would give no specifics.

He said the subpoena was delivered to Sims because she was “believed to have relevant information,” but declined to discuss what she would be asked.

It was unknown if the testimony was connected to the child custody hearing scheduled for Aug. 14.

Actors to hold gala to stop Mexican injustices

“Y Tu Mama Tambien” stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna said a gala dinner they are hosting Saturday will raise money to support human rights and shine light on poverty and injustice in Mexico.

The $300-a-plate meal in the capital will benefit Mexico's Commission for the Defense and Promotion of Human Rights as well as Witness, an organization founded by singer Peter Gabriel that promotes the use of video and film to document human rights abuses.

“Documentaries show us the injustices in the country where we live, that this problem exists,” Garcia Bernal told a news conference before the dinner. “We can't escape it.”

Luna and Garcia Bernal, who recently launched the Canana production company, also want to use documentaries to raise awareness about failures of the Mexican judicial system, including the unsolved murders of more than 300 women in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas.

Brown trustee resigns, writes $350K check

A trustee accused of misappropriating $350,000 of James Brown's money resigned and handed over a check for that amount during a court hearing, a newspaper reported.

David Cannon also resigned Friday as co-executor of the late soul singer's will during a four-hour hearing before Circuit Judge Jack Early, The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle reported Saturday.

Cannon has an unlisted telephone number and another trustee, Buddy Dallas, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

A follow-up hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 24 as various people wrangle over the late soul singer's estate.

It's not clear how much money is left in the estate, said Louis Levenson, an Atlanta attorney representing several of the singer's children. Before he died Christmas Day at age 73, Brown had been on an allowance of $100,000 a month.
