Art center to hold Twitchell exhibit
The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center will welcome a new exhibit this fall.

The Lane Twitchell, Drawing and Painting exhibit, which is slated to open on Sept. 1 and run through Oct. 27, features 15 works from Brooklyn artist Lane Twitchell as well as an illustrated catalog with an essay.

Twitchell creates large-scale, vividly colored paintings from folded and cut paper.

His designs reference religion, landscape, suburbia and modern art.

Special events include a talk by Twitchell and Thomas Piche Jr., gallery director of the Roland Gibson Gallery at SUNY Potsdam at 2 p.m. followed by a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Suggested admission for the art center, located at 205 Genesee St., Auburn, is $3 for adults. Children under 12 and members are free.

Seward House to hold final lunch

The Seward House will host one last brown bag lunch and lecture installment at noon Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the historical site, 33 South St., Auburn.

Karen Bove will take a lighthearted look at housekeeping during the 19th century.

Topics include the best place to store a hedgehog and the meaning of “rottenstone.”

Cantu elected to county board

The Cayuga County Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors elected a new member this week.

Jessica Cantu is the box office manager for Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, a nonprofit theater based in Emerson Park, Owasco.

Cantu also sits on the Absolute Dance board and performs with the Actors' Speakeasy, a professional acting group.

Kingpins to play at park before movie

The Kingpins will perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Hoopes Park in Auburn.

The movie “Paper Clips” will follow the concert. People are invited to bring blankets or chairs for the show.

Workshop aimed at women to be held

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will offer another Becoming an Outdoors-woman workshop from Friday, Sept. 21, to Sunday, Sept. 23, at Long Point on Seneca Lake in Yates County.

The department has provided these workshops for the past 13 years.

The workshop is aimed at women who are interested in or want to learn about fishing, hunting and trapping. The program is geared toward women, but anyone older than 18 may join.

The $185 program covers 30 outdoor skill classes, and includes lodging, supplies and meals.

Participants pick four half-day classes in camping, map and compass, shotgun, muzzleloading, archery, fly fishing, fly tying, fishing, deer hunting canoeing, GPS, wildlife identification, kayaking, survival and first aid, fish and game cooking and outdoor photography.
