PORT BYRON #- Classic cars roared into Port Byron Saturday afternoon for the second annual Port Byron Fire Department car show.
The show started last year as a fundraiser for the department to help raise money for the department's general fund, which helps to buy supplies and other items that aren't covered by the department's usual operating budget.
“A lot of us love cars,” event chairman Fred Laury said. “So we thought this would be a good way to have a fundraiser and have fun at the same time.”
The first year out of the gate the show was well received and proved to be fairly successful for the department.
“We did pretty well,” fire department president Bob Ware said. “We had quite a good response so we decided we should have a second one.”
Car enthusiasts from all over the state zoomed into to be at the show.
“I was at a show in Auburn and I got a flyer about this,” Reed Tarolli, who brought his 1969 GTX in from Lakeland, said. “These things are a lot of fun, you meet a lot of people and talk about cars, a good way to spend the day.”
Classic cars grab the interest of a lot of people, whether it is the roar of the motor or the gleam of the chrome, and all afternoon there was a steady stream of people pouring into the show.
“We get a lot of people,” Laury said. “We don't really keep count or anything, but all day we've had a pretty good flow of people.”
Many of whom were car enthusiasts themselves.
“It is a good show,” Doug Kirvan, of Phelps, said. “It is fun to get out here and meet new people that share the same interests and they put a good show together and there are a lot of nice cars here.”
For the two years, Mike and Sally Walker, owners of Central Body Supplies in Auburn have been the major sponsors of the event along with Fox Auto of Auburn.
“We really couldn't do this without them,” Laury said. “They really make it possible for us to do this.”
Walker said that his shop, which sells automotive paint, works with a lot of classic car enthusiast from the area and the idea of sponsoring the Port Byron show seemed like a great idea.
“I've always loved older cars myself,” Walker said. “It is something I've been into almost my whole life and I sell to a lot of these guys so I know a lot of them and it just seemed like a good idea and good event to be a part of.”
