Dozens of area book hunters lined up before the annual book sale started at 9 a.m., said Marianne Michaud, event organizer and president of the board of trustees for the library.
“The turnout so far has been terrific,” Michaud said. “A lot of the books are already gone, but we've got plenty more to choose from.”
Plenty more, she said, because of immense community support for the library. She said local residents have been steadily donating books all year, filling a stock room in the library almost to the brim.
Michaud said 30 volunteers began preparing for the event at 7 a.m. Thursday, organizing books by category and setting up tables and stands. She said volunteers continually restocked from the tables from the “depot” as happy hunters walked away with bags full of literary treasures.
As usual, the first day was the money-maker.
“We usually make half of all we make in the first day,” Michaud said.
But it's not all about making money for the library.
“This is a lot more than just a book sale,” Michaud said. “It's a community event, a place to go to see friends you haven't seen in a long time.”
Moravia resident Harriet Scarry was at the library with her granddaughter to stock up on end-of-summer reading material.
“I come here every year,” Scarry said, explaining her shopping strategy. “You come on the first day to get all the good stuff and you come on the last day for all the deals.”
The event continues through Saturday, when bags of books are being sold for $2.
“It's great - give a kid a couple of bucks and they can come back with a month's worth of reading,” Scarry said.
