Some young adults don't separate fact from fiction

The three Rs plus one - reality!
In my most recent letter, I was targeting young adults, not grade schoolers, when commenting on the Harry Potter fiasco. Most young adults and some older adults who should know fact from fiction, don't.

They are the ones who are due for a dose of reality. They are the ones who don't know fact from fiction. They are the ones who think Harry Potter is real and al-Qaida is a fairy tale!

If some people don't understand what they read (as evidenced in a recent “Two Cents” item on the subject), maybe he or she should take a course in English, if he or she can find a school that still teaches it.

" Harry Potter? Heck, the Bible is a more nonsense fantasy than Harry Potter is. Why not write a tirade against that instead? "

" Harry Potter fiasco? What are you talking about? Hundreds of thousands of people reading and talking about a book they loved -- children, adults and grandparents talking about the same books over dinner. That's the kind of fiasco I wish we had more of. "

" Just because someone likes something very much doesn't mean they believe it's real. Ever heard of a RPG - roleplaying game? What makes it all fun is that it's NOT real - so one's imagination isn't limited by the laws of physics or anything else in real life. Tons of people do Harry Potter roleplaying, while I enjoy roleplaying with one of my favorite manga and anime series. It's OK for people to use their imagination and escape into a private world of fantasy and adventure; they learn to be creative and they're more fun to be around. "

" Sorry Bob, you are off your rocker if you can compare young adults interested in Harry Potter to any of the fiasco that is happening overseas. Wow, I think that letter is worse than the first...if that is even possible. "

" What-EVER BOB! Your co-opting of Harry Potter to make some flea-brained political analogy was as about as irrelevant, UNclever and ANNOYING as Judy Ducayne's insistence on tying anything within arms-reach to yet another anti-abortion rant! Now go take your medicine and GO BACK TO BED! "
