The Citizen staff report
An Auburn police officer was injured Thursday when he was kicked in the eye by a man he was trying to arrest, police said.
Police said four officers went to 10 Burt Ave. at about 4:40 p.m. Thursday to pick up Kevin C. Cool, 41, for a mental health evaluation ordered by the Cayuga County Department of Mental Health.
While officers were in the basement of the home trying to arrest Cool, police said, Cool resisted their efforts to take him into custody. During the ensuing struggle, officer Kyle J. Platt, 36, a nine-year veteran of the city police department, was kicked in the eye.
Platt was treated at the scene by members of the Auburn Fire Department and TLC Ambulance staff before being taken to the emergency room at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Police said Platt suffered no permanent injuries but had bruising, swelling and a temporary loss of vision. He is expected to return to duty in several days.
Cool was transported to AMH for a mental health evaluation and will be charged with assault upon his release, police said.
