Extension offers guide to canning
If you enjoyed last week's story on Diane Burdick's interest in canning and want a guide on how to try it yourself, visit the Cornell Cooperative Extension on Grant Avenue in Auburn and pick up literature on how to can your own fruits and vegetables.

Lock 52 society to host tea party

The Lock 52 Historical Society in Port Byron will host a tea party at 1 p.m. today, at the society, 73 Pine St., Port Byron.

Guests are encouraged to wear hats; prizes will be awarded for the prettiest, most original and funniest hats. Refreshments will be served.

Recipes needed for local cookbook

The Skaneateles Festival Cookbook will compile recipes from fans of the 28-year-old festival for release in November.

Recipes can be submitted through Wednesday, Aug. 15, at www.skanfest.org by clicking “Festival Cookbook.” Anyone interested in submitting a recipe can also call 685-7418, e-mail music@skanfest.org or pick up a recipe form at the festival held in Skaneateles Aug. 8 to 11.

Trinity church to offer barbecue

A chicken barbecue will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Union Springs. It supports TUCC Women's Club and is sponsored by the Union Springs Lions.

Cost for a chicken half is $4. A full dinner, which includes chicken, salt potatoes, baked beans and a roll, is $6.

Barbecue held to benefit ‘kids' camp

The Falcon Sportsmen Club will hold a chicken barbecue and trap shoot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the club grounds, 2947 Turnpike Road, Sennett.

This event is open to the public and will raise funds for the club's “Kids to Conservation Camp Program.”

St. Francis Church food festival Aug. 19

The St. Francis of Assisi Church's annual Food Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the church grounds, 299 Clark St., Auburn.

Featured food will include eggplant, baked ziti with meatballs, pizza fritte, sausage with peppers and onions, hot dogs, hamburgers, steamed and raw clams, pizza, chicken gizzards with sauce, homemade cakes, wandies, cannolli, Italian ice, beer, soda, water and coffee.

FD, scouts to hold barbecue, bake sale

The Poplar Ridge Volunteer Fire Department along with the Cub Scouts will hold a chicken barbecue and bake sale at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the fire house, Route 34B in Poplar Ridge.

Prices for the barbecue are $4 for a half and $6 for a dinner. Pre-orders can be made by calling 364-7344 and leaving a message.
