The spacious lawn of H.D. Welty of the town of Owasco was the scene of much activity and enjoyment yesterday afternoon, when about 150 residents and neighbors held a picnic.

The Veterans Administration today ordered the discharge of 8,000 administrative employees as soon as possible for economic reasons. The agency estimated that as many as 500 of its 877 offices throughout the nation may be closed as a result.

AUBURN - A new shirt, a pair of shorts and a skirt - they all could be sales tax free during the first week in September. Following the state's lead, the City Council voted Thursday to suspend Auburn's portion of the sales tax on clothing purchases of less than $100 from Sept. 1 to 7.

It's been Christmas every day here ever since a tall pine holiday tree was embedded in the ground in front of St. Michael's Church late last fall. The long-standing Christmas tree was scheduled to be taken down this morning.
